Happy April Fool’s Day

Happy April Fool’s Day! Every year on this day, one thing is certain—there will be pranks. But what is little known is the history of April Fool’s Day. There are many competing claims for the advent of April Fool’s and depending on what you read, you’ll discover varied stories of the jovial celebration.

History of April Fool’s Day

Did it all start in 1582, when Pope Gregory XIII ordered the adoption of the “Gregorian calendar?” The calendar, named after the Pope himself, moved New Year’s Day from the end of March to January first. It was a widely publicized change, yet still, there were some who never got the message and continued to celebrate on the first of April. Those revelers were ridiculed and because they were seen as foolish, called “April Fools.”

Another theory has to do with Geoffrey Chaucher’s 1392 book The Canterbury Tales that kicked off the day of trickery. There’s a line in the book that references the 32nd of March, which was thought to be a joke because there, of course, is no March 32nd. Was it just a misprint?

Here’s something to ponder—could it just be that everyone is ready to celebrate the arrival of Spring with some hilarity? Whatever the reason, people have embraced the day, and have had a lot of fun doing it!

Through the years, major brands have rolled out some pretty hefty April Fool’s day pranks. Here’s a look at some of our favorites:

From Vimeo and its chief executive meowfficer, Kitty Trainor, the following blog post:

We’ve been building an innovative platform — one that you can sit on and survey your domain; tenderly rub up against; or scratch fervently, as if trying to claw the eyes out of the human who refuses to put more food in your bowl. It’s a place to hide when people come over, and a way to connect with other feral, potentially rabid strays. It’s the home for your cat videos. It’s called Vimeow.

Vimeow now lets users ‘Patiently Stalk’ instead of ‘Following’, the forum has been renamed ‘The Litterbox’ and a special feature lets creators add aloofness to any video, just like their indifferent feline stars.

Blue Moon Brewing Company

The brewing company put out a few tweets on April Fool’s day two years ago with  a message that had everything to do with that orange slice many beer enthusiast put in their beer. Alas, the introduction of the world’s first beer infused oranges.

Virgin Atlantic

He’s known to be a prankster, so perhaps no one was surprised to see the following tweet from the CEO of Virgin Atlantic Richard Branson.

Kotex

Kotex getting in on the April Fool’s action with ads targeted to those always-left-out lefties.

Turkey Hill

Our local favorite came up with a good one! It cured brain freeze with this amazing new helmet! (If only it were true!)

It’s always fun to see what comes out of the woodworks for April Fool’s day. Although we strive to execute silky smooth marketing, Velvet just wasn’t meant to be.
