Google’s Mobile Announcement

Go mobile or get lost. We don’t mean that harshly – we’re giving you a heads up!

Google doesn’t usually spill the beans before the fact, but a Google mobile algorithm update has been announced … in advance! April 21, 2015 will be a day of the mobile-friendly algorithm-update.

THE BIG ANNOUNCEMENT

“Starting April 21, we will be expanding our use of mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal. This change will affect mobile searches in all languages worldwide and will have a significant impact in our search results. Consequently, users will find it easier to get relevant, high quality search results that are optimized for their devices.”

 – Google

The new algorithm will influence the display of search results on mobile devices – very important to note, considering users are increasingly spending more time on mobile than desktop computers. Sound familiar? This is a topic you may have caught previously on the blog. If you want to get a feel for how much traffic you’re currently seeing on mobile, take a look at your website analytics. See how many of your visitors really are browsing your site on a mobile device.

Websites failing to accommodate their mobile audiences will become harder to find on Google’s organic mobile searches. If your website is not mobile-friendly, you could take a significant hit in search visibility as Google begins to recognize and applaud those who are serving up the best experience for their mobile audiences.

More to Note: Flash is also on the chopping block. Many mobile devices and browsers do not support Flash, and Google is recognizing the importance of converting to HTML5 or similar technology. Again, they’re rewarding the websites that are delivering the most optimal experience for their visitors.

WHAT’S THIS MEAN FOR BUSINESSES?

Now’s the time to ensure your website is user-friendly for all devices. Google is keeping their users in mind and making their best interest a priority, and we recommend businesses consider how this major shift will impact them.
