Behind the Scenes Q&A: Devon Buettner, Digital Marketing Specialist

Clients are always interested in learning how websites are built, and results are analyzed. So, we recently sat down for a Q&A with digital team member – Devon Buettner – to learn more about him and his role at GRIT.

 

Q: How did you become interested in digital marketing?

Devon: During my senior year at York College of Pennsylvania, I wrote a business plan on a social media management firm. Right out of college, I was hired to implement the business plan I wrote. Starting with just social media management, I moved to other forms of digital marketing like running ad campaigns, creating sales funnels and building websites. As I continued to learn more in the field of digital marketing, I became more and more interested.

 

Q: What is your favorite part of your job?

Devon: My favorite part of my job is the opportunity I have to work with a variety of different clients and markets. One day I could be working on digital ads for a health care facility and the next day designing an information architecture for a construction company’s website. I also love being able to see the work I completed, or contributed to, benefit our clients. I know I had an impact, and that is the most rewarding part of my job.

 

Q: What is the most challenging part of your job?

Devon: One of the most difficult parts of my job is defining success and then being able to communicate that success. At GRIT, we believe in being transparent and building long-term relationships, so it’s important that we’re not only doing our job well, but that we are also effectively measuring and communicating the performance of websites, ad campaigns and other digital marketing channels with our clients and team members.

 

Q: What do you think is the most common misperception of your area of expertise?

Devon: The most common misperception in digital marketing is that it is only meant for large businesses and corporations. Just because you are a “small” business does not mean that you cannot leverage digital marketing as a strategy. Digital marketing can be one of the most effective ways to help market and grow a small business.

 

Q: How do you stay on top of changes and trends in digital marketing?

Devon: To stay on top of industry trends, I spend time each week reading a variety of different sources, such as Search Engine Land, Marketing Land, The Moz Blog and more. It’s important to continuously learn about digital marketing because it’s a field that is constantly evolving. I routinely learn about new features to different platforms and/or how platforms are changing or adapting.
