Agency Life Lessons from an Intern

What’s agency life like from my perspective as an intern? Let me tell you … it’s fascinating.

At least at Moxie, that is. I had a lot of preconceptions of what I thought agency life would be like and what lessons I would learn. However, you can never truly understand the amount of hard work and dedication that goes into everything an agency does, until you go behind the scenes of the daily hustle and bustle that takes place in this industry. Since Moxie is a full-service agency, I’ve been able to see first-hand the amount of detailed work that goes into everything from advertising and marketing projects to branding and communications for a client.

As an intern, here are some key takeaways that I can share from experience, when it comes to being in the agency atmosphere:


Collaboration is Essential
Even during the busiest of times, the biggest strength of an agency is how well everyone works together… both creatively and strategically. From the beginning phases of strategy all the way to the execution, I’ve learned that the best way to deliver outstanding results is through communication and collaboration with your team members. Everyone brings something different to the table, which can be combined into an idea far greater than what you come up with on your own. Collaboration is essential.


Communication is Key
Much like everyone else you’ll ever meet, clients and partners can range in personalities and expectations. It’s important to take into account that different people conduct business in different ways. Once you can understand how to communicate effectively to each, you’re golden. Communication is key.


Be Your Own Worst Critic
Focus on doing your very best work – always. If you aren’t satisfied with the finished product, how can you expect the client to be? Simple. You can’t. Be your own worst critic and challenge yourself to step outside of your comfort zone and into the client’s mind and then into the audience’s perspective. No time for modesty. No time for second guessing. The needs of the client should always be the focus and priority of your work.


It’s quite the learning experience to see how diverse each agency is from one another and how crucial it is for a business to be in partnership with the one that’s right for them and their company. Agency life can be tough when there is such responsibility to produce amazing work and results for the client, but the Moxie team demonstrates time and again why perseverance and outlook are key to being successful in this business.

As an intern, I’m learning all about the daily ins and outs of an agency, what it takes to succeed and what it means to truly be part of the team.
